Kurdistan is considered to be the largest stateless nation today, spanning across Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria, with a small population in Azerbaijan. The Kurds have long been at war with the respective states they live in as they seek self-determination. This war has taken on different aspects at different points in history and there certainly has been progress. In Iraq, after years of genocidal persecution by Saddam Hussein, the Kurds finally achieved autonomy and today have their own parliament and their own army. In Turkey, a 25-plus-year war between the state and PKK fighters has claimed the lives of over 40,000 people. While the war continues to quietly rage on, recent government concessions have greatly improved the lives of Turkish Kurds. In Syria, however, Kurds have few rights and are severely persecuted to this day. In Iran the situation remains tense and Kurdish activists, as well as rebels, are routinely harassed, imprisoned or executed. Guerrilla activities continue, though on a much smaller scale than previously in history.
