Pol-e-Charkhi's womens prison is rough going. Inmates do not receive adequate medical attention, and several of the women there have yet to learn the crime with which they have been charged. Some of the women committed serious crimes like the notorious serial killer Shah Kuo Kuo who led some 20 plus men to their deaths. But some serve nine month sentences for being drunk, others are there because they want a divorce or ran away and their husband has caused some problem for them. Many of the foreign women got caught trafficking drugs, and the Chinese are usually doing time for prostitution. The prison warden, whom the inmates affectionately refer to as "Mama," seems genuinely concerned about the wellbeing of her subjects, but there is little she can do to help some of the women seek justice.
